Purpose-Driven EcDev – How COVID-19 Changed What the City of Vaughan’s Economic Development Department
While supporting the local economy and businesses throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, we’ve all spent time thinking about what we do, why we do it, and how we can do it with more impact. Using primary and secondary research, as well as direct experience, this presentation aims to achieve two goals: to empower economic developers with a proactive definition of what we do; to help economic developers focus on actions that can make the most impact.
This presentation will discuss some definitions of economic development (what we do), and approaches to economic development (why we do it) and walk attendees through how the City’s Economic Development Department responded to COVID. The City’s response has allowed the Department to reposition itself as a ‘purpose-driven’ unit that acts as the Corporation of the City of Vaughan’s arm to intervene in the economy when the free market is not acting in the public interest (as deemed by Council).
